What is custom software development?
Custom software is a system built specifically around your company's business process, instead of bending your operation to fit what a generic product allows. It pays off when the process you want to systematize is precisely what sets you apart from competitors — or when licenses, workarounds and parallel spreadsheets already cost more than building something of your own.
At Freshwork we have spent more than 10 years building custom software from Santiago, Chile for companies in the US, Europe and LATAM: from customer portals to platforms that handled campaigns with hundreds of thousands of users.
When does custom make sense (and when it doesn't)?
Building custom makes sense when:
- The process is core to your business and no packaged software covers it well.
- Your team runs on interconnected spreadsheets that only one person understands.
- You pay expensive licenses for a system you use 20% of.
- You need systems that currently don't talk to each other (ERP, CRM, e-commerce, logistics) to finally connect.
It doesn't make sense when a mature SaaS solves 90% of your need at a fraction of the cost. We will tell you so in the first discovery session: part of our job is recommending you not build when building makes no sense.
How we run a custom project
Our method is designed to remove the classic risk of these projects: paying for months of development without seeing anything work. We ship weekly releases against a scope prioritized by business value, so the system starts being used — and paying for itself — long before it is "finished". The full process is outlined above on this page; the rule of thumb is simple: if by week four there is nothing you can click, something is wrong.
Why hire a nearshore team in Chile?
Because you get senior engineering at nearshore rates without the offshore time-lag tax. Chile overlaps with US East Coast hours most of the year, so questions get answered the same day and calls happen inside your workday, not at 6 a.m. Delivery is fully bilingual — English-speaking engineers, documentation in English — and Chile has one of the most stable tech ecosystems in Latin America. If you later need to reinforce your own team instead of outsourcing a project, we also offer staff augmentation.
Why Freshwork
We are a small senior team: the same people who scope your project write the code. We have built systems for retail, banking, education, logistics and airlines — including platforms that held 2,580 concurrent users without going down. The code is always yours, with no lock-in. Tell us about your project and we will reply within one business day.
